Romans Series: God's Righteous Judgement
God’s Righteous Judgement FBCG – September 15, 2024
Brief Review:
• Two weeks ago:
o V. 16 -Paul is not ashamed of the Gospel for it is the power of salvation for those who believe.
o V 17 -Paul declares that the righteous live by faith (not works – Eph. 2:8-10)!
2 Timothy 1:7–8 (ESV)7for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. Therefore do not be ashamed…
• Last week:
o Paul describes what happens when God’s truth is ignored:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
o Therefore, God gave then up:
▪ v. 24 To their lusts of their hearts, impurities, to the dishonoring of their bodies.
▪ V.26 To dishonorable passions, shameless acts of giving up natural relations contrary to nature. Men committing shameless acts with men and woman with woman.
▪ Vs. 28 Because they did not honor God, He gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done, thus filling them with all manner of unrighteousness.
Romans 3:22b-23For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Psalm 14:1–3 (ESV)1The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. 2The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. 3They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
1 Corinthians 6:8b–11 (ESV)8b Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Romans 2:1–16 (ESV)1Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 4Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. 6He will render to each one according to his works: 7to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11For God shows no partiality.12For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.
κρίνω (krinō). vb. to pass judgment, to make a judgment. This verb describes the act of carrying out a judicial process or making a judgment.God’s judgment also has ethical implications for the present time. The nttherefore exhorts believers to live in reverence of God, knowing that he is the impartial judge who will exonerate them and bring condemnation upon those who defy him (1 Pet 1:17; 2 Pet 2:3–16).
Matthew 7:1–5 (ESV)1“Judge not, that you be not judged.2For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?... 5You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
Luke 6:37–38 (ESV)37“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38give, and it will be given to you.
John 7:24 (ESV)24Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
1 Corinthians 5:12–13 (ESV)12For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”
RC Sproul: “Those who are justified by faith will have imputed to them the work of Jesus, by which they are justified. But the primary basis of God’s eternal judgment on mankind will be works”
James 2:26 (ESV)26For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
Matthew 7:24–27 (ESV)24“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
2 Peter 3:9–10 (ESV)The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
Ezekiel 18:32 (ESV)32For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live.”
